Safety Review and Traffic Signal Design Ferrybridge Interchange

This scheme was to identify if pedestrian crossings and new footways could be installed at the interchange without affecting road safety or capacity.

Many years ago, traffic signals were removed from this interchange following the construction of the A1(M) motorway upgrade. The old A1(T) was very congested resulting in long delays.

Since the upgrade of the A1 to motorway standards a significant level of new housing and employment development has been undertaken around the interchange and to the north of the existing Motorway Services.

Reports of pedestrians associated with trips between the residential, employment development and motorways services have been recorded. Currently there are no pedestrian facilities, and this is resulting in an increased concern that pedestrians need catering for at the interchange.

The main identified movements are between the large distribution centre to the south west of the interchange and the motorway services and residential areas north east of the service area.

The scheme looked to address existing congestion and safety related issues whilst developing a scheme for Highways England that could be justified through the Value Management process.

Meraki Alliance developed a scheme that could be developed without affecting capacity whilst benefiting pedestrians.
